After his million dollar trilogy fight with Yi Long was cancelled, Buakaw Banchamek will return to the ring this weekend with MAS Fight and a new opponent.
The Muay Thai superstar is set to face Congolese-Dutch kickboxer Chris Ngimbi as MAS makes its debut on Cambodian soil. The seven-fight card will take place inside a TV studio this coming Sunday.
Ngimbi comes to MAS after two fights with ONE Championship on its ONE Super Series league. The 34-year-old brings a decorated kickboxing career, having faced some of the best in the business.
In his ONE debut, he lost a decision to the great Yodsanklai in Singapore, but rebounded with a win over Armen Petrosyan in July last year.
After back-to-back wins with MAS, Buakaw is riding a six-fight win streak.
In March this year he picked up a decision win over Artem Pashporin and more recently has defeated Niclas Larsen and Gaetan Dambo.
It’s interesting times in the world of Muay Thai, with ONE sniffing around for potential super fights.
Last week ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong said he would welcome Buakaw to his promotion to prove once and for all who is the greatest.
“Buakaw, if you’re there, I want to do Buakaw [Banchamek] vs. Giorgio Petrosyan… Buakaw, prove to the world that you’re number one,” Sityodtong said on the ONE Championship website.
Petrosyan, of course, just won ONE’s Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Championship and a cool USD 1 million grand prize after edging out Samy “AK47” Sana in Tokyo.
