Final Fight Championship has announced that Chris Barnett will be the opponent of Satoshi Ishii for the heavyweight championship at FFC 31 on 28 September.
This event begins as FFC’s new weekly live distribution deal with US broadcaster CBS and will take place at Caesars Entertainment’s Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
It was announced earlier that Olympic judoka Satoshi Ishii (16-8-1) would fight for the heavyweight title at the event. Ishii submitted Bjoern Schmiedeberg in the first round at FFC 30 one year ago, setting him up for the title run. He’s fought the top class fighters in the world today including King Mo, Rampage, Fedor and Jerome Le Banner. The Bellator veteran has had lopsided results in his last three years of competition. So in preparation for this title fight, Ishii has been in Croatia training with none other than the legendary Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic.
Chris Barnett (17-6) is a semifinalist in the ongoing ROAD FC Openweight Grand Prix, having last defeated Alexandru Lungu which brought him to a 2-fight win streak. While his journeyman’s career hasn’t set him in front of the names that Ishii’s faced, Barnett is a rare talent at heavyweight, with speed, Taekwondo kicks, and a huge gas tank.
Ishii doesn’t fare well in front of heavy hitters, so it will be interesting to see how his new striking dedication turns out. Barnett is always extremely fun to watch, and has the ability to stay out of reach of the judoka’s grip.
