UFC has confirmed its first event in Mainland China, setting a date for Shanghai on 25 November.
The confirmation comes after months of speculation about the UFC’s plans for the booming Mainland market, where some 35 to 40 MMA events are taking place each month.
The event is slated to take place at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai with homegrown UFC athletes likely to be front and centre.
“We are always asked when the UFC will be making its debut in mainland China,” UFC senior VP of International and Content, Joe Carr, said.
“We are honored to confirm that Shanghai will be the home of the very first live UFC event in mainland China and to say that we are excited is an understatement. The entire organization is looking forward to making history this year.”
The news comes just a week after the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation launched its China operation with the goal of regulating and promoting the sport of mixed martial arts across the Greater China region.
“This is indeed the awakening of the dragon,” said IMMAF CEO Densign White.
