Zhang Weili will continue her career inside the Octagon when she faces Jessica Aguilar at UFC Fight Night 141 in Beijing.
On 24 November, Zhang will make her sophomore UFC appearance in front of a home town crowd, as she’s training out of Beijing, China. Her next opponent is by no means a “gimme”.
Jessica Aguilar has ben fighting professionally since 2006 and currently has a record of 20-6 across the historical promotions HOOKnSHOOT, Bellator, WSOF and finally UFC. She rode a 10-fight win streak with the WSOF strawweight belt around her waist when she came into the UFC, but dropped decisions to former title challenger Claudia Gadelha and Courtney Casey before getting a win over Jodie Esquibel.
Most notable to this writer was Megumi Fujii’s retirement match in VTJ 3rd against Aguilar. Fujii ate eye pokes, and while the referee stopped the fight, she declined to claim it and kept fighting. With Fujii’s sight obviously limited, Aguilar was able to take the decision. Zhang should have a good time with her dirty boxing.
Zhang was a sanda fighter in her native Hebei, China before transitioning to MMA and making a name for herself. After winning the women’s flyweight and strawweight titles of Kunlun, she was signed to UFC and debuted August, defeating Danielle Taylor by decision.
UFC Fight Night 141 will be held at the Cadillac Center in Beijing, China on 24 November.
