Eddie Alvarez’s lightweight ambition are on hold.

ONE Championship has not had the smoothest run in its inaugural Lightweight Grand Prix.

The latest casualty is Eddie Alvarez, who has withdrawn from the Grand Prix with injury, according CEO Chatri Sityodtong.

Not a lot of details have been revealed, accept that perennial lightweight contender Eduard Folayang agreed to step in on short notice, but visa issues made it impossible.

Now, lightweight champion Christian Lee has agreed to step into the finals and face Saygid “Dagi” Arslanaliev on 13 October in Tokyo at ONE: Century.

Lee was rumoured to have a third fight in the works with featherweight champion Martin Nguyen later this year, but is now on his way to Japan to fight on the same card as his sister Angela Lee, who defends her belt against Xiong Jing Nan.

Word is still filtering through if Lee’s lightweight title will be one the line.

Details to follow.

  1. Lee was going to fight Martin Nguyen again? Surely a sign ONE needs to deepen its talent pool. Still both of them have evolved and Martin switching camps to Hardknocks365 was probably one of his better decisions. I’d watch it, again!
