With a solid unanimous decision win over Bi Nguyen in Manila last night, Stamp Fairtex made her intentions abundantly clear.
“I want to focus on MMA,” she said in a post-fight interview. “I want to fight four times, then I want the belt.”
The young prodigy looked unstoppable – pardon the pun – and all too happy as she faced “Killer Bee” over three round inside the Mall of Asia Arena.
Nguyen is no slouch and came out of the gates charging. But Stamp, already a kickboxing and Muay Thai champion, quickly imposed her strength in the clinch – first by tossing the Vietnamese-American to the mat, and then by delivering heavy knees as Nguyen tried to take her down.
Stamp stayed composed, despite some moments of brilliance from Nguyen, and continued to counter-attack with precision and power. The Thai striker barely looked troubled on her way to a unanimous decision win.
The final round saw Nguyen charge forward with more aggression than before as she looked to take her to the mat or find a KO. Neither were successful and Stamp remained elusive to get the nod from all three judges.
The Fairfax prodigy is 3-0 in her MMA campaign and needs another convincing win to put herself in front of reigning champion Angela Lee.
Two likely opponents right now are Malaysia’s Jihin Radzuan (5-1) and Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol – who’s last two wins over Bozhena Antoniyar and Nou Srey Pov have bolstered her record to 7-4.
Stamp would do well to prove she can hang with an opponent with a dangerous ground game before taking on the likes of “Unstoppable” Angela Lee. But so far Stamp’s dream of becoming a champion three times with ONE looks increasingly realistic.
