Sexyama is coming to ONE Championship.
Yoshihiro Akiyama (15-6), a Korean-Japanese mixed martial arts veteran, announced via Instagram that he has signed on the dotted line.
The promotion confirmed the signing and said Sexyama would compete in its welterweight division and help lead its charge into the Japan and Korean markets in 2019.
“He is an absolute legend in the sport,” said Chatri Sityodtong, chairman and CEO of ONE Championship.
Akiyama built a 2-5 record inside the Octagon, with decision wins over Alan Belcher and Amir Sadollah and losses to the likes of Jake Shields, Vitor Belfort, and Michael Bisping. He has not competed since November 2015, where he lost a split decision to Alberto Mina at a UFC Fight Night event in Seoul.
Sityodtong said Akiyama would compete in ONE’s welterweight division.
A fourth generation Japanese of Korean descent, he began his martial arts career garnering accolades on the amateur level. Some of those prizes include a gold medal at the 2001 Asian Judo Championships for South Korea and a gold medal at the 2002 Asian Games for Japan. Known as “Sexyama,” he made his mixed martial arts debut in December 2004 and used his world-class judo stylings as his base.
