Would you take someone who is 5’3″ and 125 as a serious threat? Make sure not to do that with flyweight KO machine Jerome Wanawan. Catch this Lakay machine gun in action at Pacific Xtreme Combat 37 this May 18th in Manila.

Wanawan’s nickname “Torogi” is Igorot backwards; homage to his ethnicity as a proud and tough warrior group from the Luzon mountains. He’s 3-1 in his burgeoning career, and with 2 KOS under his belt, looking to be a tough fighter in the PXC 57kg division. MMA-in-ASIA Philippines Correspondent Kristi Barrientos caught up with Wanawan briefly before his match with Ernesto Montillo.

MMA-in-ASIA: Why did you choose MMA over all other sports?

Jerome: It was really what I wanted to do.  I was then training in Wushu, until my skills were developed through constant training and then I decided to concentrate on MMA.

MMA-in-ASIA:  In your last fight with Eugene Toquero, you suffered your first loss.  What did you learn in that fight?

Jerome: The mistake I made on my last fight was that I concentrated and relied too much on my own power and strength. I was not able to focus on my training because I was so stressed with  juggling my teaching and my training.

MMA-in-ASIA: What have been your preparations for this fight?

Jerome: I train harder than before, I am more focused now, I give my whole time to training. In morning, afternoon and evening, all I do is train, train, train.

MMA-in-ASIA: After 2 to 4 years, are we still going to see you fight in MMA?

Jerome: Yes! Definitely the MMA fans will still be seeing me fight. It has really been my plan to continue this career that I took. I started this and I am assuring you that I will finish what I started.

MMA-in-ASIA: Work and training, do you have a family to take care of yet?

Jerome: I don’t have that in mind right now, because all im thinking is how will I be able to impress the fans on my come back. Im focusing on my fight and that’s all I have in mind right now.

MMA-in-ASIA: Sure, give a little shout out to your fans out there.

Jerome: To all my fans, Watch out for my fight on May 18, thank you for all your support and watch of for the return of “Jerome “Torogi” Wanawan”.
