It’s official. Zhang Weili will defend her UFC women’s strawweight title at UFC 248.
Zhang is set to face former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk, a fight many had predicted given their back and forth on social media in previous months.
Last month Jedrzejczyk told the SCMP she would ‘take a canoe to China’ to beat up Zhang. It turns out she won’t need to and the fight has been set for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday 7 March (8 March Asia time).
The fight will serve as the co-main event of UFC 248, the main event feature has yet to be announced.
The first UFC champion in Chinese history, Zhang defeated Jessica Andrade in 42 seconds to claim the belt on home turf at UFC Fight Night 157 in Shenzhen.
She will be heading into her first defence on a massive 20-fight win streak.
She has now defeated four opponents inside the Octagon, including Danielle Taylor, Tecia Torres and Jessica Aguilar.
Jedrzejczyk lost the title to Rose Namajunas at UFC UFC 217 and went on to lose a rematch at UFC 223. She has rebounded with two and is now looking to win back the belt.
