Vuyisile Colossa’s IMPI FC 1 took place in Hong Kong on October 31, 2014. A gregarious crowd decked out in Halloween attire watched the major gyms go head to head in the city’s long-awaited MMA event return.
The main event saw Hong Kong based fighters Sean Stolarczyk face off with Mourad Ennaceri in was was expected to be a competitive bout. Ennaceri nailed an early shoot, but Stolarczyk recovered with a rebounding offense. A huge double leg of his own saw Ennaceri put on his back where Stolarczyk rained down the punches until the ref had to step in.
Nosh Khanzada had no time to form an offense as Ederson Macedo went in for the drag down. Macedo took side control, but when he went knee on belly, Khanzada saw a shining moment to save the game and went under for a foot lock. Macedo twisted around and his much longer frame allowed him to eventually slide out of it. He then wasted no time taking Khanzada’s back and choked him out.
Bernard Fung and Yannick Tchieguen put on a rousing three-rounder of back and forth striking. While Tchieguen put on a mean mug for the touch gloves and almost got himself in trouble, it was Fung who showed the more well-rounded game. Shoots and crisp striking edged Fung higher and higher on the scorecards, even as Tchieguen foiled one of his takedowns with an illegal rope trap that was clearly intentional but not penalized. As Tchieguen slowed, Fung patiently outstruck him to the final bell.
Two Hong Koners familiar to the international MMA scene Kenny Yeung and Donald Tong were paired up for their home crowd. Tong’s game plan of shoot and takedown wasn’t working on the physically strong Yeung, so he opted for guard jumps. It was to be his undoing. From top position, Yeung kept on the pressure with sporadic ground and pound, allowing Tong no time to recover his position for a submission attempt.
Filipinos Micheal Dacuno and Rob Medalla boxed toe to toe for three rounds in the night’s first MMA fight. Dacuno bloodied Medalla’s nose early in the first, and kept him on the defense for the rest of the match, earning himself the UD.
IMPI FC will eventually hold events on both sides of the world on two different continents as Colossa hopes to develop MMA in his birthplace of South Africa, to his adopted home of Hong Kong.
The event was sanctioned and overseen by the newly-formed Hong Kong China Mixed Martial Arts Association, which aims to grow the sport of MMA regionally through ensuring safe practices, the integrity of the sport, and the livelihood of the participants.
