The UFC TUF 19 finale took place on July 6, 2014. Leandro Issa and Jumabieke Tuerxun went into the third round with vastly different striking approaches, but it was Issa’s submission skills that ended the fight.

Two men who rode on the backs of incredible reputations had a lot to lose in this fight. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Leandro Issa has been a sensation in Asia since he first took on the position at Evolve MMA in Singapore, and Kazakhstani Juma “Bieke” Tuerxun of China has made waves as the top dog in both Legend FC and RUFF.

Issa’s thrilling fights in ONE FC put him on the call list for the first UFC Singapore card, but an uncharacteristic performance put him on the chopping block of Russell Doane. Similarly, and on the same card, Bieke’s fight with fellow debutant Mark Eddiva saw him outmuscled and ineffectual for three rounds.

They both have a shot at redemption in this bout.

Issa opened the round with leg kicks, and a quick one to the head. When he went in with a flurry, Bieke took an accidental groin shot but recovered quickly. Issa shot and Bieke reversed him with power. Halfway through the round, Bieke began to land his own kicks, but his wide looping punches weren’t matching the pace of Issa. At 45 seconds Bieke finally landed one of those punches clean and sat Issa on his butt. Bieke followed him down but Issa scrambled up against the cage at the bell.

Issa started round two with kicks again and landed all of them, and Bieke responded with rapid strikes of his own, mixing up his punches and kicks. Bieke fiercely attacked with a vengeance and Issa returned but Bieke got him down. Issa reversed and grabbed the cage to do it so Mario Yamasaki deducted a point from him. Issa dove for the single and nailed it, landing in half guard. Bieke forced it back to standing and flung Issa away. At one minute left, Issa looked sharp and crisp in his strikes against Bieke’s wild, loaded up combos. Ten second clapper saw Issa kick the legs out from Bieke, but he scrambled up to toss Issa down.

In round three, Issa attacked Bieke’s lags again and quickly took him down. Issa knee slid out of half guard to side control and Bieke responded but scrambling to his front. Issa grabbed a tight guillotine in the process and got to mount but incredibly Bieke waited it out. Issa changed up positions from top and mixed sub attempts with shots to the head. Finally he found an arm bar and spun Bieke on his belly to get the tap.
