Sheldon Westcott has been pulled out of his match with Alberto Mina at UFC Macau on August 23, 2014 due to injury. His replacement is recent King of Pancrase winner Shinsho Anzai.
The bout was confirmed to Anton Tabuena of Bloody Elbow here. This is the second case of misfortune against Mina, a Hong Kong-based BJJ and Judo black belt. He was signed to appear on last year’s UFC TUF China finale in Macau, but his opponent, Zak Cummings, drastically missed weight.
Previous to the signing, Mina had one recent fight which was a dominant and quick TKO at Rebel FC. He was coming off an extended contractural obligation with Bellator during which time he never fought. Therefore, Cummings weight failure made even more of an impact on him.
Now with a second UFC opponent pulled at a rather late hour, Mina faces another challenge to his sanity. His new opponent, Anzai, is a tough wrestler and heavy striker with aggression and precision. He recently took the Middleweight King of Pancrase title from long time holder Ryo Kawamura by way of KO. After holding it all of five minutes, he handed it back to the promotion and announced his intent to drop to featherweight and seek a UFC opportunity.
Possibly sooner than Anzai could have imagined, he will get the opportunity against Mina at UFC Macau in under two weeks. Both men are extremely strong, quick and intelligent fighters, although Anzai’s is couched in his “Animal” persona a bit more. Both men also come from open competition backgrounds – Mina in BJJ and judo, Anzai in wrestling – so neither will shy from contact. In fact, it could be a match to pick for fight of the night.
