PANCRASE “20th Anniversary” features Two Titles, Two Tournaments, Sandro Returns

PANCRASE will have their 20th Anniversary show on September 29, 2013 at the 5,000-seat Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium. The event features Lightweight and Flyweight Championship defenses, the opening round of both “World Slam” Lightweight and Bantamweight tournaments including foreign powerhouse gym players, and Marlon Sandro returns to Japan against Yojiro Uchimura.

At the end of September, Pancrase will mark an historic occasion as it celebrates its 20th anniversary of promoting MMA events with its 252nd card. Considered the longest continually-running mixed martial arts promotion in history, Pancrase has fostered and launched the careers of many internationally successful fighters like Josh Barnett, Bas Rutten, Ken Shamrock, Frank Shamrock, Nate Marquardt, Paul Daley, Riki Fukuda, Satoru Kitaoka, Yuki Kondo, Genki Sudo, Guy Mezger, Maximo Blanco, Minowaman – the list goes on and on. Pancrase began as a revolutionary “hybrid” concept. It has withstood the test of time and now has its eyes set firmly on the future.

In the first of two title defenses, Lightweight King Of Pancrase ISAO Kobayashi takes on number one contender Yoshiaki Takahashi. After ISAO avenged his sole loss in stunning fashion by ousting Koji Oishi for the belt, he successfully defended the title thrice more. Tough-as-nails all-rounder Takahashi will have to cause a big upset to get the belt away. The second title up for grabs features Flyweight KOP Mitsuhisa Sunabe versus number 1 ranked Noboru Tahara. Tahara will have to figure out Sunabe’s flurry flustering early on if he wants any kind of chance to wear the strap.

In a special match, recent Bellator contender Marlon Sandro comes back to his roots in Japan to face Yojiro Uchimura, the currently ranked number one contender. Sandro’s last fight in Pancrase made him the King in 2008’s featherweight division, catapulted him on to being Sengoku’s Featherweight Champion, and then two tournaments contending in Bellator. Unlikely ZST progeny Uchimura has really stepped up to the plate in this match, and being the number one contender for the King Of Pancrase title, he will have a huge reputation to defend.

Will Noland will take on Shinsho Anzai to determine who will be the challenger for Ryo Kawamura’s title, while the KOP himself takes on Kazuo Takahashi in a fight meant to welcome him back to Pancrase and retire him at the same time. At Pancrase 248, bith men stepped into the ring and said they would retire if they lost. While Takahashi’s was planned, Kawamura bleeds black and red thus echoed his sentiments.

Pancrase 252 launches two new World Slam tournaments in the Lightweight and Bantamweight divisions with the 8-man opening round of both. Top 5-ranked Pancrase fighters will take on international opponents from overseas gyms that include ATT, AKA, Team Extreme and Nova Uniao. The second round is said to be the semifinals and finals in one night of a future competition.
