Malaysian Invasion MMA Season 3 kicks off with a national TV deal and two new divisions


Malaysian Invasion MMA, simply known as MIMMA, has announced plans for its third season.  The Tune Talk-sponsored blockbuster nationwide amateur tournament has added divisions and will have a tertiary broadcast.


MIMMA found immediate success with its first season in 2013 which was based upon grassroots level talent and savvy marketing. Hundreds of contestants joined in the competition, ant hey were put through the rigors of skills tryouts, ladder matches, and eventual brackets that led to the grand finals.

So many people tried out in fact, that seven weight divisions were able to crown champions at the close of the season. Four of those finalists joined in Malaysia’s team participation in the very first World Amateur MMA Championship in the US supported by the IMMAF.

In the second season, MIMMA brought its tryouts to the provinces which allowed even more people to take part, and taste the exciting and creative atmosphere of their special brand of MMA event. That season came to a close with most of the original champions defending their belts against the new season’s finalists. So shall be the platform for MIMMA Season 3.

At a press conference held to announce the next season, the who’s who of the current driving force behind the sport in Malaysia were present, including the Minister of Youth and Sports YB Khairy Jamaluddin, the CEO of TUNE Group Tan Hong Kheng, MIMMA Creator Jason Lo, CEO of ONE Championship Victor Cui, and Encik Jaluddin Abu Hassan who is the President of MASMMAA, the new sanctioning body in the country.

Lo spoke on the gathering of power players, saying,

“The overwhelming support from the Kementrian Belia Dan Sukan and the setting up of the Malaysian Mixed Martial Arts Association (MASMMAA) is part of all our collective efforts to create the best environment to sustain MMA careers and breed world champions. This is the legacy all of us will leave behind.”

Nationwide tryouts are expected to begin in April, and will be held in Johor, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, and Selangor. Two new divisions have been added on top of the full set of weight classes, a female catchweight division (48kg – 56.7kg) and a “Foreign Pride” division (61.2kg – 70.4kg). Among these talents, the most eligible ones will challenge the currents champions for the MIMMA Championship belts with over RM150000 in cash prizes to be won.

In a landmark deal, MIMMA has gone beyond its bespoke internet platform to deliver content and has made a television deal in Malaysia. All episodes of MIMMA 3 as well as the previous two seasons will be aired on RTM TV 1. This will further increase the promotion’s visibility and raise its profile among the demographic ripe for Tune Talk’s MMA push.

As another creative way to expand MMA in Malaysia, Tune Talk will organize ‘Mixed Martial A’RRRR!: Terror on the High Seas’, a unique cruise which will play host to an MMA event. The 4 days 3 nights cruise starts on May 31st and will visit Penang, Phuket, and Krabi.
