UFC Singapore update: Lim rises ranks to face Saffiedine, Kunimoto gets Dutra Jr.

With Jake Ellenberger out due to injury, Lim HyunGyu moves up to face Tarec Saffiedine in the main event for UFC Fight Night 34 in Singapore on January 4, 2014.

Jake Ellenberger was first reported by Brazilian press to have suffered an injury in training on Tuesday. Therefore, Tarec Saffiedine needed a replacement for the fight, and UFC officials seem to believe the Strikeforce Welterweight Champion will have a good match with someone from the Asian scene: Korean stand out Lim HyunGyu. His camp confirms the match change.

Lim debuted in the UFC on the 2013 Japan card by knocking out Marcelo Guimaraes. To prove it wasn’t beginner’s luck, he proceeded to do the same to Pascal Krauss at UFC 164. The 6’2″ 28-year old monster from Korean Top Team will have a fight on his hands, because although Saffiedine is just is 5’9″, he is no stranger to giants – he’s already faced and defeated 6’3″ Tyler Stinson – and virtually every one of his opponents has had a distinct reach advantage on him. However, Lim will test him with his 200cm wingspan.

Lim was originally set to face HEAT Welterweight Champion Kiichi Kunimoto. Kunimoto’s new opponent will be Luiz Dutra Jr. from TUF Brazil 2. Dutra won his first fight on the show but had to sit out the remainder due to injury. Previous to his UFC start, he garnered wins over Luis Ramos and Fabricio Camoes in Brazil promotions. Dutra’s only losses have come by way of freak debilitating joint injuries.
